Yesterday was World Book Day but my class is “celebrating” it today. So, here are my favorite quotes about reading….

“Lord Polonius: What do you read, my lord?
Hamlet: Words, words, words.
Lord Polonius: What is the matter, my lord?
Hamlet: Between who?
Lord Polonius: I mean, the matter that you read, my lord?”
– William Shakespeare, Hamlet

I say “words, words, words” all the time because of this little conversation between Hamlet & Polonius. I think of all the words, all the letters rearranged, and every word is the drawing of a sound with meaning. The double meaning of ‘matter’ is a perfect example of Shakespeare’s sly wit, even in tragedy. ๐Ÿ˜

“Words can be like X-rays if you use them properly — theyโ€™ll go through anything. You read and youโ€™re pierced.”
-Aldous Huxley, Brave New World

“The best books… are those that tell you what you know already.”
– George Orwell, 1984

Three from the top shelf of my own humble library.

“If you go home with somebody, and they don’t have books, don’t fuck ’em!”
-John Waters
